Dr Dorian Pritcher ger diplom och check till Rodger David Dewhurst efter att på hemväg från SICAMM i Moskva våren 2008 ha mellanlandat hos Josef Starks änka, Cristina Stark och dotter, Katarina Stark och där av Bosse Malmgrn, Stiftelsens ordförande, mottog diplom och check för vidarebefodran till Rodger David Dewhurst vid hemkomsten till Skottland.

About a nominee for the 2007 award ,

I have a very good candidate from an intellectual point of view, but the problem is that he would not class as "young" (if that is a necessary qualification).

This is Rodger Dewhurst .

I met him two years ago at a BIBBA meeting where he was showing a DVD he had made about the behaviour of his bees. These are native dark bees that he keeps in Cornwall (the far Southwest peninsular of England). He is breeding them for resistance to Varroa, largely by grooming themselves and one another and biting the mites, and is interpreting their behavioural response to Varroa in terms of adaptation of normal behaviour patterns.

I was so impressed with his powers of observation of minute honeybee movements and shuffling dances and his ingenious ideas that I invited him to present his work at Versailles.

One idea is to compress the bees by crowding, which causes them to exaggerate their attack on the mites. Although he was very nervous because he had never done anything like that before, his presentation was possibly the best of the whole conference. He felt so rewarded by the audience reaction that he is now aiming to enrol for a PhD at the University of Exeter and I will probably write him a reference.

Started beekeeping in 1972 when I bought my first hive at auction, with my father, at age 12. This was a local dark bee colony in a WBC. I learnt my beekeeping alongside my father and we became members of the West Cornwall Beekeepers Association.

I tried keeping Buckfast and Italian queens in mid 70’s, but preferred the native black bees which I have kept and selected for since. I currently keep around 40 main colonies and around 20 nuclei. Once Varroa arrived I deliberately expanded my stocks from the local bees, so as to maintain some of the local biodiversity for future breeding. This enabled me to set up Gwenen Apiaries a small business selling honey, candles, bees and hive products which helps me maintain the bees.

2009 års stipendium kommer utdelas i form av betald registreringskostnad /400 Euro/ till 9:e SICAMM konferensen i Scotland, 2009.

The Josef Stark Scholarship Award is paying the conference fee of 400 Euro at the 8^th SICAMM conference in Scotland 2009. The application for this award shall reach below mail address before April 25^th, 2009.

Första stipendiet utdelades under Apimondia kongressen 21-26 augusti 2005 i Dublin, Irland till: Richard Jefferson på förslag av BIBBA i England.

Andra stipendiet utdelades till Patrik Berg, NordBi-reservatet i Jämtland på förslag av Karl Drakenberg.

Vem tycker du ska få stipendiet 2009?

Regler i korthet: Det är en imponerande samling organisationer, (däribland SBR och NordBI från Sverige) institut och tunga namn inom biodling, biodlare i olika länder, släkt och personliga vänner som beslutat att inrätta en stipendiestiftelse med syfte att, som en uppmuntran årligen dela ut ett stipendium till förtjänstfull ungdom som främjar utvecklingen av biodling i Josef Starks anda, med huvudinriktning på bevarande-arbetet av Apis mellifera mellifera L., det mörka biet.

Och i enlighet med Josefs egen generösa person: att vid utdelandet av detta stipendium styrelsen ser till stipendiemottagarens insats och egenskaper före de formella meriterna.

Med ungdom menas inte enbart tonåring, inom biodling är man ungdom en bra bit upp runt 30. Och arbete med ’det mörka biet’ är, som framgår, inte ett absolut villkor.

Stipendiaten får konferensavgiften betald för 8:de SICAMM Conference i Moskva 2008.
